Momma sandhill crane taking baby chick for a stroll around the pond. I had watched Momma every two or 3 days for the birth of the chicks (she had two eggs in her nest) The chicks were about a day old when I first saw them. Then a week later when I got this one there was only one chick. Momma had realized by now that I was not a threat and allowed me to get close enough for this shot.

Graceful, dedicated to their mate, protective of their children, and make a great honking sound when disturbed, what’s not to love?

This fellow was on the side of the road near Pine Island in Hernando Co. His mate was on a very small island in a little pond on the side of the road. She was sitting on a nest and I stopped to get a picture of her. But like the celebrities in Hollywood, he did not like me butting into their family time and so he stalked me around the van several times. He never got closer than 4 ft., but that was only because I was MOVING!
